WAL-MART VS. TARGET: Showdown of the two superstores

VS.

As I am fairly confident many of the readers of this comparipost will recall, I remember the days when the word superstore did not exist. I grew up in a town where the local grocery store frequently bought fresh fruit and vegetables from local residents to place directly onto the racks to turn around and sell. I accompanied my parents on various occaisions selling squash, beans, and tomatoes to Mendenhall's market. For the weekly shopping we would travel to the local Reams, Smiths, or Storehouse Market, Maceys(No, not Macy's the department store) all of which were local grocery stores at the time, two of which are now out of business. I do not claim to be a protester of injustice with those stores as I understand the Circle of Life. Wal-Mart entered my life at the age of about 9 years old when my family moved to a larger city. I still was completely unaware of the percieved evils of Wal-Mart because the only thing I connected Wal-Mart to was the chance to see what new handheld Ninja Turtle Games had recently become available.

My first encounter with someone hating the Superstore was in my freshman english class in college when it came time to write an argumentative and three different people had to fight over who got to write on the dire need for more regulation on Wal-Marts ethics and practices. Alhough surprised, I didn't care much at the time because I had just purchased Napoleon Dynamite for $9.00 at Wal-Mart the day before. Over the past several years I have come to find many reasons why people would choose why to or not to have their loyalty remain in the doors of the store best known for always having the best prices, Yes Always per their claim. Who wouldn't love a store that makes sure you always get the best price.

Over the last few years I have been led in a different dirction of thinking. Upon marrying my wife, I found a few things started changing. I started to understand the problem with wearing slacks with Nike Basketball shoes and a T-shirt. I also started straying away from Little Caesars 5.00 pizza for a standard lunch. Among the things that I learned was the value of Target Superstore.

You see, I have always viewed Target as "the rich people's grocery store." Who would blame me. The store is extremely clean. All of the employees seem to be very presentable people with no bones in their noses and pink mo-hawks. Not only are the products not dented and torn, but they are not in their boxes on the shelves, rather they are neatly stacked and orderly. Clean white floors replaced the stained cement warehouse floor that I was so used to, and painted walls replaced the palets of stacked extra inventory. I figured the costs they had spent in having a clean store had to be incorporated in the buying of Circus Animals, Honeycombs, and of course my oh-so-coveted handheld Ninja Turtle game. My wife and I would argue about which store she would travel to in order to buy the weeks groceries, as I was so certain that the reason for our poorness was due to the weeks that she had decided to shop at Target, rather than the fact that we are just college students, and that is somewhat normal for people in this stage of life.

I argued with her about this to the point of driving her to do a comparison of costs of a list of common groceries that we would buy. She compared the total price of the list at Target, along with two other stores in the area that I have always considered to be great priced stores. I was shocked when she came back with the results that target had won the competition by about ten dollars. I argued no more, and ever since then have been enjoying the luxuries of a clean store with great products and prices.

Approximately a month and a half ago my wife chose to, as she likes to put it, make a deal with the devil, in that we decided to use a 300.00 gift card at Wal-Mart for our groceries for two months. This was a big step, in which we have learned the differences between Wal-Mart and Target. I feel the only place Wal-Mart beats Target on pricing is in Electronics and Furniture. They also have a reputation for a crazy return policy also known as the Wal-Mart Rental. Target tends to have a much better selection due to Wal-Marts strict standards of packaging, etc... that many companies fail to comply with.

Many have strong loyalties to where they will spend their money. Where are yours and why? Have you ever tried, or considered trying to cross the line? If so, what have you found? If not, I invite you to try crossing the line. You might be pleasantly surprised with what you find and may change loyalties altogether. On the other hand, the worst it could do is strengthen your loyalty to where ever it may lie. Which is better: Walmart or Target? Feel free to share personal experiences which has led you to this conclusion. The time has come for everyone to weigh in, and for you to decide.

Obviously, as you have already pointed out, I have a huge bias. I hate Wal-Mart. I am serious when I say that they didn't even have celery when I went there. I can find everything they have at Wal-Mart at Target, and more. Target brand food is amazing. In fact they make the best sugar cookies I have ever tasted. The stores are clean and organized, which I always appreciate. Not only that, but every Target store that I have been to is set up the exact same way so that I always know where to go to find what I am looking for. The selection at Target is fantastic, and although milk is more expensive there than anywhere else, it is a small price to pay for how wonderful the rest of the store is. And just for the record, I don't shop at Sam's Club either. It is equally as bad. CostCo all the way.

Wal-Mart is default for me if I am looking for the cheapest deal. I always know that they will have the lowest price. I was looking for a Creative ZEN mp3 player for my boy. This is a name brand thing. No question I will be going to Wal-Mart the only cheaper deal was on the internet where I had to pay shipping and wait. I agree that Wal-Mart has horrible produce at the SuperCenter. I never buy produce there but who cares where you buy your Corn Flakes, I buy them where they are the cheapest ...at Wal-Mart.

A also agree with previous comments that Wal-Mart is only second to Costco where I do the bulk of all of my shopping.

10 things I don't like about Walmart:

1- Too, TOO many people shop there. There is never a time day or night that it isn't crowded and I have to park in the 3rd to the last available parking stall that is located out in the north 40

2- There are never, ever, EVER enough cashiers.

3- They hire THE SLOWEST cashiers in the entire world. (Sorry to those of you who work there, but it is true.) Sometimes I get irritated when they make small talk with me. I am a friendly person, but when I've been waiting in line longer than I've BEEN IN THE STORE, all I want to do is scream, "QUIT BABBLING AND GET ME OUTTA HERE".

4-Self check out? COME ON. Either hire enough people to take care of your customers or I'm goin some place else.

5- Just when you get used to the layout, they CHANGE IT. What? I know that they have q-tips on this isle. Where the heck are they?? On isle 235? Wuh??

6- They sell stuff I can buy at THE DOLLAR STORE.

7- They discontinue my favorites. I HATE THAT.

8- Their meat and produce really suck. (Sorry about the choice of word, but nothing else seemed to fit.)

9- When ever I have gone to get paint mixed there, I have had to wait no less than 30 minutes JUST to have someone show up at the paint counter. This is with me going up and down the isles looking for blue jackets and asking for help.

10- Time line for getting your Rx filled at their pharmacy:

9:00am Stop at Walmart pharmacy to fill perscription

9:15am After waiting in line it is finally my turn and I hand my perscription to the pharmacy tech

9:20am After typing in my info she informs me that it will be about 20 minutes and my RX will be ready

9:45am I have browsed through the store and picked up the few grocery items that I needed (plus a couple extra things that I found) And head over to the pharmacy to pick up my RX. I am feeling pretty good about the fact that I gave them 25 min. instead of just 20

9:46am I arrive at the pharmacy again only to notice there is a long line at the pick up counter

10:15am Only two more people in front of me...

10:25am Finally - I'm a little miffed at having to wait in line for so long, but hey - that's life

10:26am What?? You don't have that in stock today?? I'll have to come back LATER this afternoon when your shipment has come? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

10:28am Well can you at least ring up these few items?? WHAT? What do you mean I have too many items?

11:05am Reach the cashier and pay for my stinkin groceries.

11:30am Call husband and ask him to please pick up RX on his way home from work

5:30pm Have dinner on the table, waiting for hubby

6:00pm Dinner is cold, you wonder where he IS?

6:10pm Send txt message, "Where r u?"

6:12pm Recieve txt message, "Im at Walmart"

6:13pm Send txt message, "Still?"

6:14pm Recieve txt message, "RX wasn't ready."

6:55pm Honey finally makes it home with Rx. He is irritated and grumpy from having to wait in line for so long on an empty stomach. You feel badly that you put him through that. Vow never to use Walmart pharmacy again.

So there you go folks. We don't have a Target around here, so I can't really compare. All I can say is that I would rather go to my neighborhood grocery store and shop (which means I pay a little bit more). BUT I never have to wait in line, they have an awesome bakery, meat dept. and produce!

Wow, I don't know how I can follow that last post! Phew! I have a distaste for Walmart, but that doesn't stop me from shopping there. I do appreciate low prices and since we don't have a Target with food around here, I'll occasionally do my weekly grocery shopping there (once every month or two.)

Things I don't like about Walmart:
1. How I feel in there: dirty, rushed, lower class
2. lack of customer help
3. LONG lines to check out
4. very picked over/manhandled produce
5. inconvenient placement of items (WHY WOULD YOU HIDE THE BUG SPRAY IN THE VERY BACK CORNER OF THE LAWN DEPARTMENT IN THE MIDDLE OF SUMMER AND NOWHERE ELSE IN THE STORE?)

Things I don't like about Target:
1. their return policy
2. the fact that they don't have a food one here. :)

Generally I do my shopping at Meijer. Either meijer or kroger.

Target is a far better experience than Wally World. It's clean, peaceful and I often go there just to look around. I like that everything clearance is on the end caps. Maybe Wal Mart has all their clearance in certain areas too but sometimes the mess can keep you from even attempting to go through it. Getting someone to help you at Wal Mart is a bad experience.
I use to work at Target, so you'd think I'd be turned off by it now, but I actually loved working there and love just hanging out there now and I appreciate how they work to keep that clean, more peaceful atmosphere

Hi, I shop a lot at Wal-mart because I can usually find everything I need there in one trip. The nearest Target is 40 minutes away, and I like Macey's groceries the best - I also support the fact that they're not open on Sundays.

Here's my question: Those of you who dislike Wal-mart alot - would you look down on other people for choosing to shop there? Do you think they are "low-class"? (granted, you do see a...variety....of people there) Would you like a person less if you found out they shop at Wal-mart and liked it?

I actually disagree with a few of the "con's" that have been presented. Just my weirdness, I guess.

I like the fact that I have to park forever away - I feel like I get more exercise in spite of myself.

I like the self-check-out, especially when I only have a few purchases, or embarrassing items (those of you who know me know I'm a notorious blusher :)

I also enjoy the small-talk with the cashiers because I like to see them smile. (Sorry about all my weird preferences!)

Wal-mart has a lot of cons, too. But I like to even things up. Sorry Target, don't know you well enough to argue for or against (but I hope to some day! *crosses fingers*)

Just curious what everyone else's opinions are! :)

They are both evil and destroy small businesses. I don't shop at either. Buy local or from people who support the scene behind the products being sold. For example, buy guitars from the local music store ran by a musician or skateboards from the local skateshop ran by skaters (yeah I am a little biased on that one since I own a skateshop :) ). Support who deserves the support.

I shop at walmart over target 9 times out of 10. In fact the only time I stop at target is if I will pass it on my way to something more important.

1. I also like the self checkouts. My typical purchase is less than ten items and I can check myself out faster than most checkers. I do get annoyed when someone decides to use the self checkout for the first time with 378 items in their cart and can't figure out how to ring up their donuts without a barcode.

2. I never park forever away, but I'm not going to reveal my secret in public. (and no it doesn't involve counterfeit handicapped tags)

3. I still find it hard to believe that walmart would lose in a comparison of the food items I typically buy. I am currently in Alaska and I'd put $100 on walmart beating Fred Meyer and Safeway. Even in Utah their prices are pretty competitive. I will admit though that if you shop the sales Maceys is probably best.

4. I have never had problems with walmart pharmacy and you can thank their $4 prescriptions for driving down costs at other pharmacies. I always call in mine and show up an hour after they say it'll be ready, but I did that before I used walmart pharmacy.

5. If you ever need moving boxes just show up after 11 PM and load up a cart. I've done this three times now and never had a problem. In fact once we went through the checkout with a cart full of boxes.

6. Plastic carts, I don't know if all Targets still have those plastic shopping carts, but I just don't like them.

7. Ship to store. Walmart will ship most online purchases to your nearest supercenter. I got free shipping on many Christmas presents, including my wife's favorite, her Cube World guys.

8. Cheap jerky. I love jerky, and I haven't found anywhere that can compete with Walmart prices.

9. Cheap new release DVD's. Where else can you find a DVD the day it's released at $14.97

I will always take functionality over aesthetics and that's what it comes down to for me, shop at clean and neat target or cheap and fast walmart.

I have not made a commitment to either one yet. I like and dislike each for different reasons.

Wal-mart:
-It is crowded
-workers are never there to help, and I think they avoid me on purpose
-the workers are rude to me
-the lines are never shorter than 30 min wait (but I have seen clean stores nice people and fast lines at the Kearns Wal-mart!)
-they ALWAYS seem to have put the storage containers in the wrong place so it says they are cheaper than they are
-The speakers are always shouting some inaudible thing, giving me a head ache
+I find it hard to believe they lost on price comp. They are cheap
+You can return anything. I once returned a can of paint! (although it did take me 40 mins to get that can of paint in the first place) They have a huge selection of just about everything. They have a fabric and craft section, They just have so much more to choose from here.

Target:
-Honestly, they do NOT have the same selection, even in the foods, that Wal-mart or Smiths does. I have tried grocery shopping multiple times and although they have tasty, well packaged brands, they don't always have normal basic cooking products. I mean, I would never find wheat gluten here. And the brand name prices may compare fine, but the equate brands are always less when it comes to toiletries.
-They don't have as many departments. I could never get $1 fabric at Target. Or get my tires changed. Or buy paint.
+The workers are well groomed and helpful
+no intercom!!!!
+Well designed products. It's my favorite place to get clothing. And I love their home decor, furniture, etc
-(movies are better at k-mart than both of these stores)
+I can always get a good parking spot
+Lines are fast
+They have good prices for better stuff
-Horrible return policy
-They pay their better workers, much less than walmarts crapy workers

So it just depends what I need that day what store I will go to. I like and dislike them both. I feel MUCH happier at Target though, and hope for situations that I will only need their more limited selection.

-Melissa

Dude sometimes I hate them both. I like target better though. Target is lame with returns and are the recturn nazis, but Wal=mart is kind of evil. They messes up my medication when I was breatfreeding, givine me prozac instead of what I was suppose to have and they were kind of jerks about it. Lucy got sick from it and was throwing up everywhere and they weren't even really that sorry.
